Wine Wise Guys

Wine without the Attitude!

July 2006 - The Wine Wise Guys' Favorite Finds!

Despite the blistering summer heat, the eight Wine Wise Guys (Jan, Elmeda, Paul, Carolyn, Tom, Laura, Joyce, Chuck) gathered for a blind tasting of recent favorite finds. There was no price limit and no particular type of wine. The only criteria was that for some reason or another the wine was a standout.

Each of the ten entries was wrapped in foil. The capsule foil with identifying information was removed and the bottles were then assigned numbers. The Wine Wise Guys tasted each wine and recorded their findings on their score sheet. The name and price of the wine was revealed only after the tasting was complete and the score sheets tallied. The top two picks of each person were collected and used for the rankings.

A real find was the Thorpe Foch. Thorpe Vineyard is a small winery (2,000 gal. a year) a little east of Chimney Bluffs State Park and the only winery in Wayne County, New York. The vinters offer a range of wines made mostly from their own hybrid and Vinifera grapes. Foch is a red hybrid and often shows its native parentage to its detriment, but Thorpe's did not. Thorpe's Foch was very clean and was chosen over five comparably priced Viniferas in our blind tasting.
